Close shot is that countrywomen are stooping down to pick up the spikes; long shot is that harvest scene of the country.The main hue of this whole picture is warm color, but we feel dismal and oppressed through it. I am not moved by Miller’s superb technique as a painter, the spirit behind the theme of the picture is a kind of convulsion to the depth of my heart.
From this picture I remember an ancient poetry in China:
“At noon they weed with hoes;
Their sweat drips on the soil.
Each bowl of rice, who knows,
Is the fruit of hard oil?”
