This picture was probably painted in 1894, the date inscribed on another landscape (Private collection) showing the same site.
In the summer of 1894, between his two Tahitian periods, Gauguin worked in Brittany at Le Pouldu and Pont-Aven.
The exact location of the landscape in the present painting is not known
