Chrysanthemums, 1882
Claude Monet (French)
Between 1858 and 1882 Monet painted forty-nine still lifes, twenty-one of flowers.
The subject combined Monet''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s interest in gardening and painting, a relationship that assumed a far greater role after he moved to Giverny in 1883.
Like his "Bouquet of Sunflowers" of 1881 (29.100.107) this still life was probably painted when poor weather had driven the artist indoors.
Both pictures exploit color, rhythm, surface, and touch to the fullest extent.
